Problem & Proposed Solutions
A lightweight framework for fast, low-stakes (Type 2) decision making.
We should think about two categories of decisions - Type 1 and Type 2 as framed in Jeff Bezos' letter to shareholders. Type 1 - "closed door" decisions that can't be reversed. Type 2 - "open door" decisions that are reversible.
"Action produces information." - not sure, maybe John Elway.
Nearly all decisions are Type 2 - and therefore should be made fast. Slowing down in hopes of a near perfect solution doesn't lead to perfect outcomes. What drives higher quality, faster decisions is the information we uncover, that accelerates learning and enhances speed & quality over time.
The template helps managers set expectations, enables teams to document their decisions, move quick and learn over time. If a Type 2 decision is made poorly and yields a bad outcome...not a big deal. The beauty is that the decision is documented and can easily have a postmortem ran to improve the next outcome.
